From a 2003 interview with Founder Patrick Janicke in W magazine:

"The idea for the SCHNUFTIGIRL as a character or a visual theme has been in my head for over three years. A long time ago, my brother and I saw this furry neighborhood girl with a blond mane walking her lion-like chow-chow. Like for many other characteristic people who we kept running into but whose names we didn’t know, we gave her a name based on the Janicke Brother type gut feeling, an onomatopeia-type association we had with her. She was the original SCHNUFTIGIRL."

 

Note from the art director: It is a bit of a spiritual juxtaposition: www.schnufti.com displays a line of vintage t-shirts by young Hollywood fashion designers featuring art prints and drawings inspired by early iconic schnuftigirl sightings, while a schnuftigirl prefers dresses over
T-shirts! How come?".
